When columbia first issued this album 6 of the 9 tracks were shortened drastically to fit them on the lp. I m sure i m not versed enough in jazz to assess what it is that makes mingus mingus but listening to ah um again an album i plucked from my dad s collection at age 15 i remember sitting in. For the music for the performance and for this absolutely perfect reissue mingus ah um is a must have album in any collection and a definitive vinyl gourmet audiophile top 100 record. Mingus hard pull of the strings on fables of faubus is also abrasive and detracts from horace parlan s piano solo.
